And Finally ... !

What you say and what they hear

As mentioned in the editorial our innocent transcribers had a hard time understanding the gibberish spoken at the recent Galactic Center conference in Tucson. If you think you speak clearly and in simple terms, think twice. Below is a short dictionary of words that appeared in the transcripts and their actual meaning:

what the transcriber heardwhat the scientist said

``point oh 2'' =     0.02
``flux dance'' =flux density
``one milligantz'' = one milli-Jansky
``several milligenskis'' = several mJy
``microchancies'' = micro-Jansky
``Schwartzendragers''= Schwarzschild radius
``giga-arcs'' = GHz
``Heil''= Well (attributed to a German speaker)*
``jet lag feature'' = jet-like feature
``low frequency stir''= low frequency (radio) spur
``nometer range'' = millimeter (wavelength) range
``radio inflorates''= radial inflow rates
``Reinhart'' = the name for all speakers with German accent
``Beagleman''= Begelman
``[India]''= Narayan
``[Aussie]'' = Mark Wardle
``Schotz''= ``Charles'' (Townes)
``Rozack''= ROSAT

Finally, here is a sample of the interaction between two speakers, to give you a sample of the intelligibility of some of the transcripts (of course ``Reinhart'' was not really Reinhard):

Man?: Was this a flea-flique?
Reinhart: Flea-Flique, correct.

(We are assuming the actual discussion was about free-free emission!)

*Needless to say that at least one of us was not very amused.
