This summer's IAU meeting will see a number of discussions on the Galactic Center.

Invited Discourse 4 will take place at 18:15 on Tuesday, August 22. Dr. Reinhard Genzel will deliver the keynote address, ``The Power of New Experimental Techniques in Astronomy: Zooming in on the Black Hole in the Center of the Milky Way.''

Symposium 238, ``Black Holes: from Stars to Galaxies - across the Range of Masses'' runs from August 21 to 25 and will have a session on the Galactic Center

The IAU Division VII: The Galactic System, whose current president is Dr. Patricia Whitelock (South African Astronomical Observatory), is considering making a working group on the Galactic Center and Nearby Normal Nuclei. To this end, they are sponsoring a one-day meeting on these topics at the IAU on Monday, August 21 from 9 am to 5:30 pm in Club B Room.

The current schedule for this Division VII session is

  • 0900: The Supermassive Black Hole at the GC - Mark Morris
  • 0930: Radio Imaging of SgrA^* - Avery Broderick
  • 1000: Recent near-IR/X-ray measurements & the first time-resolved AO near-IR polarization measurements - Andreas Eckhart
  • 1020: Coffee
  • 1050: The SgrB2 region in H13CO+ and SiO Lines - Masato Tsuboi
  • 1110: The Galactic Centre region as seen by H.E.S.S.- Loic Rolland
  • 1130: Theory of accretion and flares - Sera Markoff
  • 1400: The young stellar disks in the central parsec -Thibaut Paumard
  • 1430: The origin of young stars in the central parsec - Simon Portegies Zwart
  • 1500: The Spitzer mid-infrared survey of the inner 2 x 1.5 degrees of the galaxy - Howard Smith
