This page was significantly revised on Wednesday, 17may00, 8:00am
MDT.
Participants should generally fly into Albuquerque International Airport;
several options are then available to get to Socorro. The drive takes
about 80 minutes by bus. Please let us know your travel plans --
this is very helpful in making sure we don't leave anyone behind
at the airport!
NRAO/NMT will provide vans or buses to transport meeting participants between
the Albuquerque International Airport and the block-reserved Socorro hotels (
see the accommodations page). The cost is
covered by the registration fee.
- When you arrive:
Participants should go directly from the airplane gate to the baggage
pick up area. At the base of the escalator is an Information Desk. A
"Greeter" from NRAO (wearing a spiffy conference tee-shirt) will be in
this area from roughly 2:30pm to 11pm MDT to assist meeting participants
with transportation issues.
Participants should collect their baggage and wait for the bus to
arrive at the far west end of the terminal. Our greeter will assist
you with directions to the bus or to rental car desks.
The conference transportation bus will be parked at the west end
entrance of the driveway for picking up airport passengers. The curb
is marked with a green stripe. The bus will have a sign displayed &
identifying it with the conference. The bus will arrive approximately
15 minutes before scheduled departure time (3:00pm MDT, 6:00pm MDT,
and 9:40pm MDT). Due to the number of participants renting cars, there
is plenty of room on the bus, so don't worry about getting a seat. The
last departure time is scheduled for 11:00pm MDT. The late-night
"greeter" will drive an 11-passenger van to transport any late night
arrivals.
- The final schedule for buses leaving the airport for
Socorro is:
3:00pm MDT, 6:00pm MDT, and 9:30pm MDT
with the 11-passenger
"sweeper" leaving around 11:00pm MDT. There will be a shuttle running
between the block-reserved hotels and the Macey Center
reception/registration, between 5:30 and 10:00pm MDT.
- Car rental: Meeting participants can rent cars at
their own expense; please make your own reservations. Participants from
outside the USA may contact Terry Romero
(tromero@nrao.edu;
(505) 835-7315) for assistance in making these reservations. There is
minimal public transport available in Socorro, so those who will be
accompanied by their families will probably want to rent a car or use
their own private vehicle. Ample free parking is available at Socorro
motels and near the conference halls. Please see the
map page for directions and local maps.
- Commercial transportation:
Meeting participants can use commercial shuttles at their own expense.
A typical one-way cost is about US$ 50. Again participants from outside
the USA should contact Terry Romero
(tromero@nrao.edu;
(505) 835-7315) for assistance in making these reservations.
- There will be a sign-up sheet for both shared rides and NRAO/NMT
transportation in the lobby of Macey Center.
- The preliminary schedule for departures is:
- 24 May 2000 (Wednesday): 6:30pm, 9:00pm
...the 6:30pm bus will leave from Workman Center after the
VLA 20th Anniversary Celebration, and should reach the
airport around 8:00pm
- 25 May 2000 (Thursday): 8:00am, noon, 5:00pm
...the 5:00pm shuttle should be able to take hikers to the
airport after the Long Hike
- Note that we cannot take anyone to the airport before the
end of the VLA 20th Anniversary Celebration -- all our
buses will be in use, ferrying people between Socorro
and the VLA site.
- Commercial transportation:
Meeting participants can use commercial shuttles at their own expense.
A typical one-way cost is about US$ 50. Again participants from outside
the USA should contact Terry Romero
(tromero@nrao.edu;
