And Finally ... !
What you say and what they hear
As mentioned in the editorial our innocent transcribers had a hard
time understanding the gibberish spoken at the recent Galactic Center
conference in Tucson. If you think you speak clearly and in simple
terms, think twice. Below is a short dictionary of words that
appeared in the transcripts and their actual meaning:

| ``point oh 2'' | = | 0.02 |
| ``flux dance'' | = | flux density |
| ``one milligantz'' | = | one milli-Jansky |
| ``several milligenskis'' | = | several mJy |
| ``microchancies'' | = | micro-Jansky |
| ``Schwartzendragers'' | = | Schwarzschild radius |
| ``giga-arcs'' | = | GHz |
| ``Heil'' | = | Well (attributed to a German speaker)* |
| ``jet lag feature'' | = | jet-like feature |
| ``low frequency stir'' | = | low frequency (radio) spur |
| ``nometer range'' | = | millimeter (wavelength) range |
| ``radio inflorates'' | = | radial inflow rates |
| ``Reinhart'' | = | the name for all speakers with German accent |
| ``Beagleman'' | = | Begelman |
| ``[India]'' | = | Narayan |
| ``[Aussie]'' | = | Mark Wardle |
| ``Schotz'' | = | ``Charles'' (Townes) |
| ``Rozack'' | = | ROSAT |
Finally, here is a sample of the interaction between two speakers,
to give you a sample of the intelligibility of some of the transcripts
(of course ``Reinhart'' was not really Reinhard):
Man?: Was this a flea-flique?
Reinhart: Flea-Flique, correct.
(We are assuming the actual discussion was about free-free emission!)
*Needless to say that at least one of us was not very amused.
