NRAO-NM Users Data Area on Network Servers

filehost

Every NRAO-NM user has a 4GB area on filehost for their data and this area is backed up by the Computer Infrastructure Division (CID).

Your filehost area may already be mapped in your Windows Explorer to a drive letter, e.g., Z:\.   If not, your area on filehost can be access on your Windows computer by clicking on Start, Run, typing in \\filehost\<username> (e.g., \\filehost\mglenden), and clicking on OK.   Non-local IMAP email folders are kept by default in your filehost area.   In addition, you should keep a copy of the data you cannot afford to lose on filehost.

Note: data on \\filehost\<username> is readable by all NRAO-NM users by default.  If you want to change the default, contact the AOC Help Desk for assistance.

vladca

Windows users at the VLA should have an area on vladca for their data and this area is backed up by the CID.

If you are a Windows user at the VLA, your vladca area should already be mapped in your Windows Explorer to a drive letter, e.g., U:\.   You should keep a copy of your data on vladca that you cannot afford to lose.

Note: data on \\vladca\<username> is inaccessible to other NRAO Windows users by default. If you want to change the default, contact the AOC Help Desk for assistance.

NRAO-NM Users Data on Windows Computers

Every NRAO-NM Windows user should have a C:\Users\<username>, e.g., C:\Users\mglenden, folder on their Windows computer.

Your My Documents is located in C:\Users\<username>\My Documents by default.   In addition, your Firefox configuration files along with your Thunderbird local email folders are in C:\Users\<username> subfolders.   Most new Windows computers have either a CD read-writable or a DVD read-writable drive along with burning software like Nero installed.   We strongly recommend that you use your read-writable drive to do regular backups of your C:\Users\<username> area.

Note: contact the AOC Help Desk for other local Windows data backup options.
