Windows XP

NOTE: You must have administator rights on your Windows computer.

  • Click on the Start menu, and select "Printers and Faxes". This will bring up a windows which shows all printers available. Click on "Add Printer".
  • The "Welcome to the Add Printer Wizard" pops up. Click "Next".
  • Select "A network printer" and click "Next".
  • Select "Connect to a printer on the Internet" (note, only an admin user can select this option). For the URL, type in one of the following:
    • http://aocpfsa.ad.nrao.edu/printers/aoc213/.printer
    • http://aocpfsa.ad.nrao.edu/printers/aoc213c/.printer
    • http://aocpfsa.ad.nrao.edu/printers/aoc324/.printer
    • http://aocpfsa.ad.nrao.edu/printers/aoc324c/.printer

If your computer doesn't have the driver for the printer you are trying to add, you'll need to download it and install it.


Windows 7

In order to proceed, be sure that the following two things are true:
  1. You must have administrative rights on your computer
  2. You must have one of the following versions of Windows 7:
    • Windows 7 Home Basic
    • Windows 7 Home Premium
    • Windows 7 Professional
    • Windows 7 Enterprise
    • Windows 7 Ultimate
The Starter version of Windows 7, which is installed on some netbooks, will not work.

To add a printer:

  • Click on the Start menu, and select "Devices and Printers". Click on "Add a printer".
  • Select "A network, wireless or Bluetooth printer" and click "Next".
  • Select "The printer that I want isn't listed" and click "Next".
  • Select "A shared printer by name", and type in one of the following:
    • http://aocpfsa.ad.nrao.edu/printers/aoc213/.printer
    • http://aocpfsa.ad.nrao.edu/printers/aoc213c/.printer
    • http://aocpfsa.ad.nrao.edu/printers/aoc324/.printer
    • http://aocpfsa.ad.nrao.edu/printers/aoc324c/.printer

If your computer doesn't have the driver for the printer you are trying to add, you'll need to download it and install it.

If you still can't print, be sure to check the following settings:

  • Click on the Start menu, and select "Control Panel", the click on "Programs".
  • Under "Programs and Features", click on "Turn Windows features on and off".
  • Find "Print and Document Services", and click the + sign to expand.
  • Check the box next to "Internet Printing Client" and click "OK".

MAC OS/X

Note: you must have admin access to add a printer.

  • Click on System Perferences...
  • Click on Print & Fax
  • Click on the + to add printer
  • Click on IP
  • Protocol: Internet Printing Protocol - IPP
  • Address: printhost.aoc.nrao.edu:631
  • Queue: printers/<Printer Name from above table> e.g. printers/aoc213
  • Name: <Printer Name from above table> e.g. aoc213
  • Print Using: Generic PostScript Printer or Select Printer Software... -> <Select the correct driver for Model above table>
  • Click on OK
  • Click on Add
  • Select any desired options like Duplex Unit
  • Click on Continue

Linux/Unix

These instructions are for Red Hat, your particular Linux may be different.

  • at prompt type system-config-printer
  • click on new printer icon
  • Type in printer name(from above list)
  • Select Internet Printing Protocol(ipp)
  • Hostname: printhost.aoc.nrao.edu
  • Printername: printers/(printer name from above list)
  • Select HP -> HP 9040mfp for the HP's or Xerox -> Phaser 8560
