JVLA Naming Ceremony, March 31, 2012

This web page contains links to photos I took at the renaming of the EVLA to the Jansky VLA on March 31, 2012. There are some photos taken on the drive up and back. The first big event was a tour of the Correlator for those who helped make it. The photographer who was going to record the event officially was sick so I was asked to help with the photography, mainly because I have a very wide angle lens. Later, we all went to the Antenna Assembly Building for speaches and lunch. Finally, people went to the visitor center and cafeteria to see displays and take tours.

First are the main group shots. These are selected from the half dozen or so I took for each group.

There are three sections of photos beyond that on this page. The first contains pictures from before the ceremony. These are mainly from the visit to the correlator room. Normally nobody is allowed in that room. I gather that even some of the people who have been working hard on the correlator had not actually seen it assembled before this event. Note the clean room jackets and booties. The second section is at the ceremony and the lunch. The third section is from after the ceremony.

I was encouraged to make all of my photos available on the web. So the following pages have my extras - those that I did not put on the main web show on this page. That can mean they duplicate others, are of low quality, or I just did not decide to put them on the main page. The extras are in three sets:

Extras from the correlator visit and before.

Extras from the JVLA Naming Ceremony.

Extras from after the ceremony.

The Ceremony.
The speeches and the meal, but mostly closeups of people. I don't have photos of the moment of the waving of the wand by Fred Lo to start science observing because I was taking a video.

There were diffraction grating slides to play with so I took a couple of photos through one. This shows a fluorescent light's spectrum.
