Local Transportation
NRAO
bus service cancelled due to lack of interest -- see below.
Please walk, carpool, or take the shuttle from the
Holiday Inn to/from the workshop. The parking lot by the AOC has been
very full lately, and cannot accommodate the >40 rental cars being driven
down from Albuquerque.
Participants should generally fly into Albuquerque International Airport;
several options are then available to get to Socorro. The drive takes
about 80 minutes by bus. Please let us know your travel plans!!
Since very few (6 of 100) participants requested it,
NRAO will NOT be providing transportation to/from the
airport. This is partly because over 40 people are renting cars.
We have e-mailed the six who were planning on taking the NRAO bus, with
information on others arriving at nearly the same time who will have rental
cars. There will also be a small "sweeper van"
leaving the airport around 11pm on Wednesday 22aug01, for
anyone who somehow winds up stranded.
If you were planning on taking the NRAO bus please
let us know as soon as possible. Many participants are taking rental cars,
and there is also a commercial shuttle available
- When you arrive:
Go directly from the airplane gate to the baggage claim area.
At the base of the escalator is an Information Desk. A
"Greeter" from NRAO will be in this area from roughly 6:00pm to 11:00pm
MDT to assist with transportation issues.
Our greeter will assist you with directions to the rental car area.
- Car rental: Meeting participants can rent cars at
their own expense; please make your own reservations. Participants from
outside the USA may contact Terry Romero
(tromero@nrao.edu;
(505/835-7315) for assistance in making these reservations. There is
minimal public transport available in Socorro, so those who will be
accompanied by their families will probably want to rent a car or use
their own private vehicle. Ample free parking is available at Socorro
motels and near the conference halls. Please see the
map page for directions and local maps.
- Commercial transportation:
Meeting participants can use commercial shuttles at their own expense.
The phone number for Socorro Taxi is (505) 835-4276 or 1-800-991-4276.
A typical one-way cost is US$ 50. Again participants from outside
the USA may contact Terry Romero
(tromero@nrao.edu;
(505/835-7315) for assistance in making these reservations.
- There will be a sign-up sheet for shared rides
in the lobby of the Array Operations Center.
