Debra ======================================================================= Testing the CASA qtviewer: 17oct06 General comments: ====================================================== I loaded in an IR image in miriad format (called 'h') that had the headers modified a while ago. This worked. Loading fits images also worked. The adjust panel comes up fast! So nice. I like the way you can use the middle mouse button to scroll through the options in, say, grid color. I like the fact that I have an option to keep the "Load Data -Viewer" panel open or not. I like the fact that I can click on the 'x' in the top right of the window without worrying that I will hose the software. There are 2 areas (sub-panels) at the bottom of the viewer that are separated by dots. One gives some cube control and the other gives positions. Its cute how the little buttons on the top right of each area allows you to get them out of the viewer display panel and put them in separate panels or change their distribution. I especially like the fact that I can cut and paste positions easily. If I recall, the stats tool is coming soon - when will this be ready? Recommendations for changes and bugs: ====================================================== 1. Viewer sub-panels: For the viewer position sub-panel, there are 2 lines and lots of white space that looks like: h ----------------------------------------------------------------------- -2.163e-01 05:39:24.597 +35.39.19.124 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- It would be better to have this take up less room and be easier to read: h ----------------------------------------------------------------------- -2.163e-01 05 39 24.597 +35 39 19.124 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Things changed: - ra/dec now on the same line and in the same format (no : or . separating entries) - white space taken out below the usable information. - or is this used at other times? If this spaced is used for something else, then I would rather this space be left in rather than resizing the window all the time when new information is being displayed. Since this sub-panel is re-movable, this is not such a big issue. 2. Zoom I would like to have an "unzoom" button. It is tedious to have to make a little square in a zoomed image and then double click outside of that square to unzoom. Also, when I did this, it appears that the amount of unzoom is related to the actual size of the square you make. So when I first did this, I didn't get a full 'unzoom.' 3. Starting the viewer: I don't like having to start the viewer up with a required image as input. Sometimes I like to start the viewer and then browse the different types of images to see which one I should pull in first. Since there is a 'Load data - viewer' panel that I can bring in images at will, there should be no need to require an input image name when the viewer starts up. When I tried to start the viewer without specifying an image, I got an error message. Please change this so the viewer can be started without specifying an initial image. 4. Viewer processes when CASA exits: Its rather odd, I exited CASA when I was finished but the viewer did not go away. In fact, I could continue to work with the image even after CASA was gone. When I grep for CASA processes nothing shows up. When I grep for viewer processes, I see the qtviewer is still running. This seems dangerous - if there are processes that are running in the background or hung, it will be difficult to find them if they there are multiply named processes. Of course, you could argue that this won't happen but I'm not so convinced. It seems to me that the qtviewer should shutdown when the user exits from CASA. 5. Miriad images not recognized in Load data - viewer panel The first image I brought in was an h-band IR miriad-format image called "h." When I went to the Load data - viewer panel, no other miriad images in that directory were available to be loaded. This panel only seems to recognize the fits images even though the miriad image could be loaded and manipulated OK. 6. Second image loaded cannot be viewed When I tried to load a second image (here they are fits images) as a contour plot overlaid on the miriad h band image or as a raster image, I could get no contours displayed and I could not get the raster image to display (the viewer kept crashing when I tried to unregister or close one image to see the other raster I had brought in). Even though the second image had a tab in the adjust panel suggesting that the 2nd loaded image is recognized, I could never get it to display. ---------- Also, I cannot get position information on the second file I register. The position sub-panel says I'm looking at the first image I start the viewer with (in this case, image 'h') but g173.k.fits-contour, for example, is not displayed. Shouldn't the positions sub-panel have tabs you can select different images with so you can see the intensities of all at a given position? Is this related to the problem that the 2nd image cannot be viewed at all? 7. Absolute levels on contours in adjust panel: When I went in to adjust the contour levels, I could select "abs" contours and the contour levels but there was no way I could set the absolute level - this input is missing in the basic settings panel and should be included. 8. Crash and burn episodes: When I loaded 2 identical FITS images as rasters (over the miriad h-band image), then I unregistered one (because I didn't need both, they are the same). Then I tried to remove the one that I had just unregistered, the viewer crashed and I lost all. It did crash cleanly, no processes were left open. I started a new process: viewer 'k' - bringing in a miriad-format K-band NIR image, and then loaded a fits raster image: g173.h.fits. Then I tried to un-register 'k' so I could see g173.h.fits but the viewer crashed then too. This is repeatable. I'm not getting error messages when the viewer crashes but it does drop a core file. On the positive side, I can just restart the qtviewer with a new image - it doesn't crash CASA. So much better than when glish had catastrophic errors. ----------------------- End of viewer testing for now. _______________________________________________ Aips2-naug mailing list Aips2-naug@listmgr.cv.nrao.edu http://listmgr.cv.nrao.edu/mailman/listinfo/aips2-naug
