NRAO AIPS++ Users Group Meeting Date: 2003-1-22 (Wednesday) Time: 1300 MST Video Hub: SOC-conf Rooms: SOC317/CV311/GB241/TUCN505 Agenda and Minutes: (send corrections & additions to smyers) 1. ALMA o Debra, Kumar, George, myself (and Tim, Linsdey, Boyd and Doug) will be going to Garching for an ALMA slugfest next week (Jan 25 to Feb 1). Wish us luck :-) Joe and Sanjay will be holding down the fort in Socorro. o ALMA audit has been approved by ALMA SSR http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/~smyers/alma/offline-req/ALMAoffline_audit.pdf 2. VLA Requirements, Audit and Evaluation (Steve and Debra) o========================================================== Due to upcoming ALMA commitments by Steve and Debra, the due date for the Audit will be extended to Feb 7, 2003! ========================================================== No changes to the draft will be made before we get back on Feb 1 (and there are still stuff people sent before Debra's last draft that have not made it in yet), so you can work from this version without worrying about updates. o Latest versions incorporating contributions are in: http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/~smyers/aips++/vla/VLAoffline_audit.pdf http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/~smyers/aips++/vla/VLAoffline_audit.ps.gz http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/~smyers/aips++/vla/VLAoffline_audit.tex This was made from the versions in Debra's area: http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/~dshepher/aips++ One of these two areas will contain the latest draft, check the dates on the files. o In my latest draft above, I have make a stab at defining the modes of the VLA - this is included as Appendix A. Look this over and comment. o I also included Frazer's wide-field requirements as Appendix B. Please look these over and think of how to turn these into Use Cases. o Use Cases (brought up during last meeting): - it is hard in the current document to see whether a given path, (e.g. Frazer's wide-field case) is supported - should have a set of paths or use-cases written as a list of steps (which can be linked to requirements in the main document) which define a mode - put these as appendices to the requirements (like in the ALMA SW-11 document, see http://www.alma.nrao.edu/development/computing/docs/joint/0011/ssranduc.pdf - do use cases after this audit o Reminder - Current assignments (as updated during last meeting): 1. Operations - Fomalont (benchmarking), Chandler (interface, etc.) 2. Data Handling - Myers/Butler (format,in/ex), Claussen (data examination) 3. Cal & Edit - Taylor (gain calibration, polarimetry), Hibbard (spectral line), Frail (flagging), Chandler (atmosphere) 4. Imaging - Shepherd, Fomalont, Butler, Brogan, Owen (wide-field) 5. Analysis & Vis - Brogan, Brisken, Claussen 6. Doc & Help - Hibbard, Claussen, Shepherd 7. Special - Butler and Bastian (solar sys, including the Sun), Brisken(astrometry), Claussen (simulation), (deleted pipeline part) 3. GBT (Steve and Joe) o "gbtssr" list is available on mailman - if interested, join at http://listmgr.cv.nrao.edu/mailman/listinfo/gbtssr o "NAUG" GBT requirements/evaluation draft progress report (Steve) - draft was produced on 10 Jan. Can find this at: http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/~smyers/aips++/gbt/naug_gbt_eval.tex http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/~smyers/aips++/gbt/naug_gbt_eval.pdf http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/~smyers/aips++/gbt/naug_gbt_eval.ps.gz These reqs were drafted by me and are rough and incomplete. In particular the priorities and timescales were somewhat arbitrary. These are under comment by the GB folks (Jay Lockman). Note: Harvey's old SDcalc email is incorporated as Appendix A. NAUG comments welcome also! o GBT modes should be incorporated as appendices, eventually work up the use cases o Volunteers for GBT reqs and testing: From CV: Hibbard, Hogg, Liszt, Turner and AIPS++ (Garwood) From GB: Lockman, Langston, Mason, Minter and AIPS++ (Braatz) From TUC: Mangum From SOC: Dyer, Chandler - Dave commented that it will be important to incorporate as much of the 12-m expertise that we can (agreed!) 4. AIPS++ news o We have moved to a sub-cycle "snapshot" stable release (1 month - 6 wks) to allow clearer targeting and planned functionality availability on faster turnaround. You can see the webpage set up at: http://aips2.nrao.edu/daily/docs/reference/updates.html This was just updated to release v1.8 build 447 (2003-01-18) to keep up with the ALMA/IRAM changes. The update page now contains the list of - completed (and incomplete) targets - defects resolved We will refer to this for tracking testing Joe plans to add a list of targets planned for the next upcoming snapshot. It was suggested we build our testing around these builds Will also link the next snapshot so we can track progress o Note that the AIPS++ Home Page (http://aips2.nrao.edu/docs/aips++.html) now points to the documentation for the stable snapshot as default, with a link to the released version. o Project office: we are in the process of putting together an AIPS++ project office like that at GBT that Nicole put together, see http://projectoffice.gb.nrao.edu (Note that this is still under construction.) In March, there is a target for Joe and Nicole to get together and set up the AIPS++ project office in a similar fashion. o Benchmarking: Sanjay is writing up a memo on the VLA procedures and results, draft will be available soon for NAUG comment. We are finding out interesting things about imaging speed etc., and through profiling are making progress in tracking down bottlenecks. Keep tuned! 5. Upcoming meetings and deadlines: o Jan 25 - Feb 1 ALMA Offline/Pipeline meeting at ESO Garching o Feb 5 AIPS++ Tutorial Video Conf. (monthly) o Feb 6-13 Joe and Steve to CV/GB o Feb 7 VLA Audit due (delayed) o Feb 18 NRAO Internal DM/NRAO Computing Review o March week 1? AIPS++ Technical Review o Mar 18-19 ALMA Computing PDR (Tuscon) The agendas for past NAUG meetings are archived at: http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/~smyers/aips++/agenda/ The minutes for past NAUG meetings are archived at: http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/~smyers/aips++/minutes/
