Minutes of 2002-Jul-24 NAUG/AIPS++ Meeting (draft) (Please send any additions/corrections to me) Attending: ---------- AOC: Brisken, Brogan, Chandler, Claussen, Moellenbrock, Myers, Owen, Taylor CV: Fomalont, Hibbard GB: McMullin Notes: ------ Summer School: Comments on the summer school reduction sessions have been distibuted by Debra. Additional feedback distilled by Greg and Debra: o Keep group sizes small. The suggested 1 person per group is probably not feasible. o Would like the documentation to have GUI based instruction (related to equivalent Glish commands). o Would like more comments on how to do things - what is the expected outcome of a task (more instructional on interferometry). o Use a different spectral line data set to illustrate functionality better. Overall the summer school was well executed thanks to the joint efforts of the AIPS++ and NAUG members. There was additional discussion of where to take the cookbook for the next stage (e.g. incorporating the GUI elements, splitting the continuum and spectral line components out). More discussion of this will happen separately within the NAUG to achieve consensus. Chandler discussed the difficulty in using the system initially; suggested items will be tracked separately. Release: The AIPS++ release v1.7 was completed. ISO images are available on the documenation pages. CDs are in the process of being duplicated and distributed. The release notes contained the NAUG comments on VLA reduction in a single section; we hope to have similar sections from other observatories in future releases. Myers mentioned the decoupling of release dates from meeting dates. AIPS++ anticipates having a longer development cycle for the current plan to re-align the releases. The Development Plan for V2.0 is nearly completed. We will send out an e-mail pointing at the document when finished. George reviewed a number of changes and defect resolutions in calibration and associated tasks: o fixed channel selection in setdata o fixed reported calibration application problems o improved first-guess estimation in calibrator solve o scan listing in ms.summary o fitstoms fills SCAN_NUMBER column (allowing selection) o added scan number selection in msplot o added spectral plotting to msplot o interface improvements to flagger o line data is now properly filled by vlafiller Several other NAUG priorities are nearly finished and will be reported on when complete (e.g. scan-based solution intervals and gain curve corrections). Shepherd reviewed several problems currently in the system. o PB correction can not be done properly for accurate flux scales. o concatenation of MS has a problem with the precision of positions (if they differ by small amounts (9th digit)). Need to have a facility for concatenating sources with slight offset (and performing appropriate phase shift). Defected. o skycatalog overalays help was wrong. Couldn't get annotations to work. Also, wants greek letters, superscripts, etc. o Need UV continuum subtraction facility. _______________________________________________ Aips2-naug mailing list Aips2-naug@listmgr.cv.nrao.edu http://listmgr.cv.nrao.edu/mailman/listinfo/aips2-naug
