From jmcmulli@cv3.cv.nrao.edu Fri Mar 15 10:50:35 2002 Date: Fri, 15 Mar 2002 10:46:22 -0700 (MST) From: Joe McMullin Reply-To: aips2-naug@donar.cv.nrao.edu To: aips2-naug@cv3.cv.nrao.edu Subject: [Aips2-naug] Minutes 13 Mar 02 Minutes of 2002-Mar-13 NAUG/AIPS++ Meeting Attending: ---------- AOC: Brisken, Brogan, Chandler, Claussen, Golap, Moellenbrock, Myers, Owen, Taylor, McMullin CV: Fomalont, Hibbard Notes: ------ o There were several inter-meeting discussions on improving the communication and efficacy of the testing effort. In light of this, we reviewed the NAUG functions: 1) identify NRAO scientific priorities, 2) help debug the system, 3) tutor new users, and 4) help increase deployment of the package to the community. The organization of the NAUG is relatively straightforward. McMullin coordinates the group on behalf of AIPS++ operations. Fomalont, and Jewell in separate meetings, are the lead scientists. AIPS++ contributes 30% of developer time to defect correction and user support which is matched by a corresponding effort by internal users. Blame McMullin for problems in the following areas: 1) negotiation of test targets (with Fomalont), 2) chair meetings and track progress on agreed targets, 3) accurate minutes, and 4) ensuring that AIPS++ delivers support to the NAUG at the specified level. Blame Fomalont for problems in the following areas: 1) overseeing of test activities, 2) chairing separate meetings as necessary, and 3) ensuring that the NAUG delivers support at the agreed level. Overall, it will be important to review function and communication issues regularly to assess progress/problems. o A further review of the NAUG testing process was made. Previously the target list was larger than the available effort. We have focussed on fewer targets to improve efficiency. In addition, to accomodate the varying level of support available from each NAUG member, we allowed a sign-up based on interest and ability for the targets, culminating in a small team of AIPS++/NAUG members in each area. This team is tasked with coordinating a date for face-to-face interaction/testing on the target. It is hoped that this will produce better, faster and stronger testing (we have the technology). o McMullin reviewed recent AIPS++ development (completed targets) based on a suggestion by Brogan. This was deemed useful and will be maintained as a standard agenda item. In addition, 73 defects had been resolved since the last meeting. Sifting through this list was deemed too cumbersome by the NAUG; Moellenbrock volunteered (really!) to sift through this list and provided information only on germaine defects. Owen and others recommended that the completed targets and defects would be useful as a web page for the NAUG to review. This will be implemented and updated on a weekly basis. The NAUG will receive an announcement upon implementation and updates. o Several new recipes have been submitted and added to the documentation. Please see: http://aips2.nrao.edu/daily/docs/recipes/Recipes/index.html for the full list. o The User Interface Survey results are being written up as a Note in the AIPS++ documentation (Kemball). Initial impressions are that there wasn't a clear consensus on changes. Along those lines, the NAUG will be getting together to distill its comments on the viewer. Brogan had tried out the new histogram min/max setting in the viewer and liked it; her only issue was that it wasn't obvious how to find this feature (since the wrench menu is sometimes standard and sometimes offers additional functionality). A 'red' wrench idea was bandied about briefly but tabled for later discussion. This information was forwarded to the viewer developers who are ready to talk to the NAUG regarding comments on improvements/interface. o Review targets: The targets were set as below. Initially, the Date field was to specify the date for coordination but this was difficult for people to commit to on the spot. Instead, based on a recommendation by Moellenbrock, this will be the report date for the coordinated meeting. NAUG Targets NAUG AIPS++ Date ---------------- ---- ---------- ------- o high frequency cal Claire,Steve George 27-Mar o imaging Ed,Crystal,Steve,Wal.Kumar 27-Mar o imager (single dish) Ghigo Joe 27-Mar o calibrater (spectral line) Hibbard Athol, George 27-Mar o viewer review Brogan, Hibbard * 27-Mar o VLA calibration scripts Taylor George 27-Mar o Execution efficiency Fomalont Sanjay, Athol 27-Mar --- This target though important relies on fulfillment of the above; its target date is 10 April o Documentation (Cookbook) All George 10-Apr o Other: 1) Hibbard mentioned two outstanding msplot defects that are holding him up. Kemball has been assigned these and they will be looked into. It was suggested that there may have been a problem in that the calibration columns may not have been created yet and so couldn't be displayed (still bad fail). Follow-up. 2) Taylor brought up the summer school. He has provided the data that will be used for analysis and this has been followed up in a separate message. 3) Fomalont will be visiting the AOC 25 Mar - 1 Apr. _______________________________________________ Aips2-naug mailing list Aips2-naug@listmgr.cv.nrao.edu http://listmgr.cv.nrao.edu/mailman/listinfo/aips2-naug
