From jmcmulli@aoc.nrao.edu Thu Nov 29 09:48:18 2001 Date: Thu, 29 Nov 2001 09:42:40 -0700 (MST) From: Joe McMullin To: aips2-naug@charybdis.aoc.nrao.edu Subject: minutes Minutes of 2001-11-28 NAUG/AIPS++ Meeting Attending: ---------- AOC: Brisken, Brogan, Chandler, Claussen, Fomalont, Kemball, Marson, McMullin, Moellenbrock, Myers, Taylor CV: Shepherd Notes: ------ o Discussion of NAUG organization and function o Brief (re-)introduction to the DDTS bug tracking system for AIPS++. We covered entry into the system and basic defect queries. It is recommended that users login with their NRAO e-mail id. o Reviewed the status of the AIPS++ release (1.6). It has been delayed by several weeks to deal with unresolved high severity defects. We are in the second patch cycle (weekly) with two more to go. Dec 7 is the deadline for the final version of the release. Hardcopy reports of recently resolved defects (last 3 weeks) were distributed for verification by NAUG members. o Discussed the release notes for the AIPS++ v.1.6. This contains general information on the release (installation instructions, requirements, etc.) in addition to current capabilities and known problems. The NAUG members were tasked with drafting a version of the current capabilities (what's present/what's missing/problems) for NRAO instruments with the very short deadline of Dec 5th. o Discussed the drafting of NRAO's scientific priorities for v1.7. Ed Fomalont had circulated an initial version of this list which was to be discussed in more detail by NAUG members at the conclusion of this meeting. A draft version will be finished by 11/29 in time for the AIPS++ site managers meeting. AIPS++ targets for the next development cycle will be established circa Dec 15th; final versions of the NRAO scientific priorities should be available for the Dec 13th NAUG/AIPS++ meeting. o Discussed how NAUG targets should work. The emphasis for NAUG members should be on creating scripts for different reduction avenues; these scripts can then be formally retained to better develop the cookbook documentation and aid other NRAO users. In addition, sample datasets (<50MB,non-proprietary) should be set aside for testing and demonstration. The idea of a using a single data set for all testing was strongly rejected at this time. o Reviewed additional problems by testers. Fomalont discussed a recent bug in flagger which was fixed. He is in the process of reviewing the VLA cookbook documentation (Moellenbrock). Moellenbrock will check-in the detailed(!) comments by Shepherd and send an e-mail announcement to aips2-naug so that the revised version can be reviewed. A small discussion on script organization ensued which is underway (Moellenbrock). McMullin will send out a similar note for GBT documentation. Taylor plans to try to break msplot soon (before Marson leaves). He also brought up a severe defect which prevents the tool manager interface search string from working. He discussed a new feature in ms.summary which is useful and has plans for enhancement suggestions. Brogan discussed her dissatisfaction with response to viewer defects and enhancements. In particular, specific scientific needs weren't being met which can be addressed by the NAUG recommendations for scientific priorities. Phone/video conferencing with the display library group (mainly located at the ATNF) was recommended in cases where improved feedback was needed. o McMullin briefly reviewed some recent commissioning activity involving Shepherd's Orion experiment. Initial VLA+GBT data combination is underway. o Meeting was adjourned with NAUG members convening for discussion of scientific priorities.
