NRAO AIPS++ Users Group Meeting Date: 2003-2-26 (Wednesday) Time: 1300 MST Video Hub: SOC-conf Rooms: SOC317/CV311/GB241/TUCN505 Agenda: 1. Technical Review and Development Cycle o The AIPS++ Technical Review will be held in Socorro next week, March 5-7. The panel is: Andrew Lumsdaine U. Indiana CS Roger Brissenden CfA Hilton Lewis Keck Doug Tody NRAO Dave McConnell ATNF Rick White STScI Steve Scott OVRO David Silva ESO A huge document has been prepared for the reviewers, located at: http://www.nrao.edu/~tcornwel/aips++technicalreview.pdf Note this is 300+ pages and 6+MB! This will eventually be turned into a Project Book. o Note that the review is a closed meeting, alas. What are the NAUG comments on this, e.g. will the results of this Technical Review be accepted by the NRAO users? What can we do to help this? o The current development cycle ends March 31 (for release 1.8 or 2.0 depending on what we decide, probably 1.8). Planning for the next cycle will happen right after the Tech Review, so we should prepare a report based on or request for the current cycle. There are so many deferred targets that we will likely have an interim development plan that essentially extends the current cycle targets. o There will probably be a big development planning meeting held later this year to munge over the Tech Review fallout. o Some improvements to look forward to (George,Kumar,Dave,Joe)... 2. ALMA o Summary of the goings-on in Garching (Jan27-Feb1) o Results of AIPS++/IRAM Phase I o Progress of AIPS++/IRAM Phase II testing o Status of ALMA benchmarking & IRAM Phase III o New features (e.g. iramcalibrater improvements) o Preparations for PDR 3. VLA Requirements, Audit and Evaluation (Steve and Debra) o OK, we are way past due, but we should have something for the tech review people to look at - they have been pointed at my current version (see below). o Latest versions incorporating contributions are in: http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/~smyers/aips++/vla/VLAoffline_audit.pdf http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/~smyers/aips++/vla/VLAoffline_audit.ps.gz http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/~smyers/aips++/vla/VLAoffline_audit.tex o I would still like comments on the modes defined in the appendix. We need some test data in all these modes. o Use Cases (brought up during last meeting): - it is hard in the current document to see whether a given path, (e.g. Frazer's wide-field case) is supported - should have a set of paths or use-cases written as a list of steps (which can be linked to requirements in the main document) which define a mode - put these as appendices to the requirements (like in the ALMA SW-11 document, see http://www.alma.nrao.edu/development/computing/docs/joint/0011/ssranduc.pdf - do use cases after this audit o Reminder - Current assignments (as updated during last meeting): 1. Operations - Fomalont (benchmarking), Chandler (interface, etc.) 2. Data Handling - Myers/Butler (format,in/ex), Claussen (data examination) 3. Cal & Edit - Taylor (gain calibration, polarimetry), Hibbard (spectral line), Frail (flagging), Chandler (atmosphere) 4. Imaging - Shepherd, Fomalont, Butler, Brogan, Owen (wide-field) 5. Analysis & Vis - Brogan, Brisken, Claussen 6. Doc & Help - Hibbard, Claussen, Shepherd 7. Special - Butler and Bastian (solar sys, including the Sun), Brisken(astrometry), Claussen (simulation), (deleted pipeline part) 4. GBT (Steve and Joe if he is back) o "gbtssr" list is available on mailman - if interested, join at http://listmgr.cv.nrao.edu/mailman/listinfo/gbtssr o "NAUG" GBT requirements/evaluation draft progress report (Steve) - draft was produced on 10 Jan. Can find this at: http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/~smyers/aips++/gbt/naug_gbt_eval.tex http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/~smyers/aips++/gbt/naug_gbt_eval.pdf http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/~smyers/aips++/gbt/naug_gbt_eval.ps.gz These reqs were drafted by me and are rough and incomplete. In particular the priorities and timescales were somewhat arbitrary. These are under comment by the GB folks (Jay Lockman). Note: Harvey's old SDcalc email is incorporated as Appendix A. NAUG comments welcome also! o After meeting with the gbtssr in Green Bank a week or so ago, we came to the arrangement where they would tackle the Use Cases for the modes and write them such that they could be easily unfolded into requirements. I would like to set a due date for some of these (April 30?). o Volunteers for GBT reqs and testing: From CV: Hibbard, Hogg, Liszt, Turner and AIPS++ (Garwood) From GB: Lockman, Langston, Mason, Minter and AIPS++ (Braatz) From TUC: Mangum From SOC: Dyer, Chandler - Dave commented that it will be important to incorporate as much of the 12-m expertise that we can (agreed!) 5. AIPS++ news o We have moved to a sub-cycle "snapshot" stable release (1 month - 6 wks) to allow clearer targeting and planned functionality availability on faster turnaround. You can see the webpage set up at: http://aips2.nrao.edu/daily/docs/reference/updates.html This currently consists of release v1.8 build 479 (2003-2-5) The update page now contains the list of - completed (and incomplete) targets - defects resolved We will refer to this for tracking testing It was suggested we build our testing around these builds Will also link the next snapshot so we can track progress o Project office: we are in the process of putting together an AIPS++ project office like that at GBT that Nicole put together, see http://projectoffice.gb.nrao.edu (Note that this is still under construction.) o Benchmarking: Sanjay is writing up a memo on the VLA procedures and results, draft will be available soon for NAUG comment. 6. Upcoming meetings and deadlines: o Mar 5-7 AIPS++ Technical Review (Socorro) o Mar 18-19 ALMA Computing PDR (Tuscon) o Mar 31 End of current dev cycle o April xxx NRAO Visiting Committee o May xxx?
