Paul Padilla's NRAO Work Website

I am a VLBA Telescope/Correlator Operator for the NRAO and sometimes student at New Mexico Tech (NMT)

Main Work duties include:
  • Sending out Observation Files to all VLBA Telescopes
  • Watching over the "health" of the telescopes during and between observations
  • Troubleshooting problems with the telescopes
  • Calling Site Techs when necessary to fix problems at the telescopes
  • Preliminary Data Quality Checks through analysis of monitor data and System Temperatures
  • Keeping accurate logs of events for each observation, including potential sources of RFI, maintenance or other downtime, and reporting of weather conditions at all sites.

  • Correlation of data after it arrives at the AOC in Socorro
  • Distribution of Correlated data to disk or DATs.
  • Watching over the "health" of the Correlator while correlating.
  • Troubleshooting of the Correlator and Mark5 PBDs.
  • Arranging for any maintenance that may be required on the Correlator or Mark5s.
  • Keeping accurate logs during correlation of data
Secondary Work duties include:
  • Updating of various VLBA webpages
  • Assisting with miscellaneous duties of other VLBA personnel as requested.

As far as school is concerned, I have a B.S. in Physics with a minor in History from NMT. I am currently working on a B.S. in Mathematics, possibly with a minor in Philosophy, also from NMT. In the future, I hope to begin working towards a Masters and/or Ph.D. in Theoretical Astrophysics or a similar field.
