In The Name of God Amen.
In the early years of TheWeb--c1994--I used to do Infoseeks fairly often, and since I never found anything much impurressive or eartshaking, I kinda maybe just gave up seeking. I don't know at what point I really gave up. Then one day a coupla short months ago all that changed. All of a sudden I was getting hits on Names Which Only I Should Know. hahahaha. Since that time I have been literally staggered on Several occasions and "introduced" myself to numerous cousins, abt whom I'll share more later. But in the meantime I can now get to know some of these people herein listed before I have to meet them On The Street Up In the Sky or Down In The Valley; It means a whole lot to me, In The Name Of God Amen.
[This is the same great Day of the Week Calendar for any year that's on genemack--

And I don't mean to sound like an awards show but I have to here thank my Uncle Ralph Stephenson, RIP,
for making sure I had all
the essential family group records in the first place, and for as far back as he knew, which was pretty far.
And then some. And
long after I had been content with the thought that I was as far back as I was going, up popped a Weakley
County RootsWeb line of tombstones that went from my Uncle Almond to my Great Great Grandfather
Mann Patterson. I almost fainted--WHo could have uploaded these pics???
It had to be someone close, reaaaaal close, the person who put those pics up on that website.
Turned out it was my Cousin Linda, my GrandPappy's Brother's Grandchild, who I didn't at all know.
In an earlier day, I'd a known her by sight, alas!! And she shared with me her family information, abt
which I knew Nothing!! Sent me pic tures of My Great Uncle Floyd and his Beautiful Wife with a
wonderful name, Annie Brite.
I had before seen pics of him--long ago--but we all know how the division of photographs goes over the
generations.
In any case she broke down the door to several more generations of Stephensons--I still don't quite
understand how it was my Uncle Ralph either didn't know or hadn't made me aware of Solomon
Stevenson/Stephenson and beyond.
So finding the 3 previous generations of Stephensons was abt as close to overwhelming as anything of
the written word could be. I still haven't recovered, I'm hooked with knowing more.
Ad dict ed to knowing more.
Since Jonathan Stephenson (David's second-oldest son) left Wake/Johnston Counties c1844 (daughter
Mary Malvina E.? Stephenson Fagan was born in Wake NC 1843, John Jasper Newton STephenson was
born in Henry County, TN 25 4 1844) there has been no contact between this branch of the Stephenson
family and anyone in North Carolina. It might have even been as early as 1836, but this date doesn't much
jive in my brain with the Wake County birth dates mentioned above. My father remarked in his
memoirs that he often wondered why this was true. He said he had never heard anyone,
however ancient, speak of anyone in North Carolina, although he very well knew his forefathers were Malkus,
Mann, Jonathan,
and David. I want to think that Jonathan's leaving North Carolina was one of Opportunity and Discovery,
but I just don't
really know this. And I want to think that if travelling hadn't been so tough and life not so hard, that if
given the opportunity, that he would have sent an email or something back to those folks once in awhile.
But I don't really know this either.
And I don't really know much abt the beginnings of any 'Colonial Society' nor of
any First Families of Raleigh, but I have this Sweet Vision abt times then: Samuel Pearson built
the Yates Mill in 1756--Some British Lord Proprietor of Something or Other granted him a Section of Land (640 Acres)
and by the very nature of human society, everybody around him visited Samuel's mill to get their cash, to
process their food, and maybe to hang with his sons and chase his daughters. That's how I think things went down
back then.
Samuel Pearson had a whole slew of daughters--6 of em, to be exact--and with all I've read, and nothing
so far contrary, it seems that the Pearson Sisters married well into Raleigh Society, if they infact didn't
actually define it. Everything points to this, but you see, I just don't know. They were
Rachel,
Patience,
Charity,
Fereby,
Esther, and
Peace.
(Slap me now, slap me...Did someone just drop me out of a book or something??????)
The Stephenson House
This picture was on the first generation of wakecounty.gov, the Wake County website, but they have since taken it
down--David's son David built this house, and I believe this is the house from which Colonel LD Stephenson was hung
(but not kilt) from the balcony by yankees in the Civil War because of his outspoken views.
I had originally thought that this was David's father's house, but have since found the real deal:
If you fly here 35°42'06"N, 78°42'13"W on Google Earth it's very easy to see how David and Charity's house evolved
to remain the focal point of this entire lakefront neighborhood.
And Charity's just younger sister? Fereby Pearson's house "...is located south of Raleigh, off Old Fayetteville Stage Road, and is
shown on Price-Strother 1808 Map of North Carolina as "Col Whitakers," and probably is the
oldest house now standing on its original foundation in Wake County."
Fereby's House
So the Stephensons owned and operated just a little southeast of the mill and as fate would have it,
these families are just abt as connected as it
gets. Andso armed with the names that I had and the info piling up rapidly I came across this most
illuminating Website
If you look for a place in the Wake County Census where there are 3 Davids in a row, you will find
David Stephens (Stephenson), and from this original listing--and all I've learned--I can tell which direction the
census taker is going--the names of neighbors and relatives just jump off the page.
You get inklinks of thingggs, like I have right now with Patience McKinne and the name Aycock...
One of the first place names I learned in this quest was 'Camp Branch'--kinda center-right
on this map, near the name A Utley--Polly Stephenson married Alvin Utley.
A little further east, over by Panther Branch, is the name McCullers--two of David's
sons, Stephen and David, married McCullers (I spent the better part of a week trying to determine if
they were sisters, which to my mind they almost certainly are).

Joel Lane's brother,
TakeALooook at one of Frances Cullom Harper's links once again:
The reason I found these maps at all was because I did a search on 'Terrible Creek', and on the 14th
page of hits, I found the Woodward page.
So there are Maps and More Maps. Pretty soon I'm gonna see Grandpaw just walk right out of one of em, I
swear. My goal is to find
David's clothes line in his back yard. From the sky. They talk abt yer old quiltmakers. I've made my
share of quilts, By God!, only these are digital things, Then overplayed with Now, or overlaid with streams and
sometimes not.
And here's the name Stephenson, located right where Angier is today.
That was a Eureka! moment, I remember. Things were.....falling into place.
It was very cool finding my Cousin in Alabama--awesome, infact. She is a triple great or greater
granddaughter of Polly Stephenson (Jonathan's sister) and Alvin Utley.
One of the things I've had the hardest time getting used to is the following:
Sarah Matthews McKinney [Mackenny McKinnie] Stephenson (wife of Solomon) is my ggg gg Grandmother,
I finally accept this. And I'm in awe. Sarah. Matthews. Mackenny. Wife of Solomon.
Owell, So I guess that'll abt cover it for now, but in this section I have a final lame thought:
I was last here on the 22nd of October, 2004
Fereby Pearson lived in John Whitaker's Echo Manner Plantation, that's what it was called.
I think it's awesome--noone can deny the enduring and still standing legacy of Charity and Fereby.
Brother Simon received the Mill in Samuel's Will and married Polly Atkins, whose family also owned a
nearby mill. On Atkins Road.
The more I learn abt David Stephenson, the more I'm convinced of the closeness of his friendship with
Simon Pearson, son of Samuel (and brother of Charity), who's born the
same year, 1749. Paris Allen Pearson, brother of Charity, marries Mary Gilmore; David names his first child Simon, who marries Sally
Gilmore, probably Paris and Mary's daughter; Elizabeth Utley marries Asa Pearson; Alvin Utley
marries Polly Stephenson. Samuel Pearson's mill, which is located on Steep Hill Creek and
which stayed in the Pearson Family for two generations,
got its present name from the last individual who owned and operated it. It had long been a slowly
collapsing though picturesque part of the NC State University landscape when some right-minded
benefactors came to its rescue in the 90s, and just in the nick of time. Samuel Pearson's Mill is now owned
by NCSU and is the centerpiece of the new State Park and Recreation ARea--I hope I've stated this with
some degree of accuracy. heheh
Renovations had already begun when Hurricane Fran struck or else the mill would probably have joined the
other 39 or so Mills which had collapsed, leaving no trace or hint of a way of life which once was.
Yates Mill is on the National Register of Historic Places and is without any doubt the most photographed
object of any kind in Wake County.
But what is more, there are Stephensons buried at Yates Mill. I had thought I'd know who is buried there by this
time but I guess it's not to be just yet.
One other thing abt Yates Mill--
The STephensons and STeephill Creek (Yates Mill)--I keep coming back to the alliterative connections here--it's my
nature. More than once I heard my father explain the phonetics of Stephenson as Steep n son. ??? Avery small curiosity.
Yates Mill History
Frances Cullom Harper's Christopher Woodward page
which forever changed my understanding of Stephenson geography.
All I can say is that I'm surprised I haven't found any Woodwards--so far--in the Stephenson family
but I won't be surprised if and when I ever do.
With this map
Raleigh Area, c1870
the biggest part of the Geographic Mystery was solved. Thank you very much.
The instructions here are very simple: look for A) Stephensons,
wherever they may be, and B) the intials L.D.S., just to the right of
Peace's Plantation. This has to be the Home Place of David Stephenson, who died in 1808, if in fact
they are not his own initials. David's son David had a son David and these initials are probably his.
But IN ANY CASE the location hasn't changed. Those initials LDS could very well stand for,
(are you sitting down?)
Leonidas Dacostas Stephenson.
To carry on , just above these initials is the name M Whitaker. Fereby Pearson married John Whitaker.
Let's cruise around this map: Right below Cary, and to the right is Yates Mill, on Walnut Creek.
If this is the same as Steep Hill Creek, I'd like to know this, but it really doesn't matter. This is
Samuel Pearson's mill. Right below this is Ramcat (I can read it no other way) Road and just below this is
where it gets real
interesting for me. I see Atkins (Simon Pearson married Polly Atkins), and in two distinct places on this map
the name Stephenson and the name Atkins are associated: up near the source of Swift Creek and
next to GW Atkins Mill, near Atkins Road.
Today, March 4, 2004 I learned indeed there was an Atkins/Stephenson connection-- suffice it to say,
all map names have been put there for you to find. !!
Is Peace's Plantation from Peace Pearson, Samuel's daughter, who married William Pope.
I don't know, but I do know Samuel Pearson was c1776 "Minister of The Peace",
or somesuch royal sounding term, and I can't help but think Peace got her name from this connection. It's
a romantic notion, maybe that's all it is. Samuel Pearson was also given charge of 8 miles of Road.
Just which Road is, of course, on my Agenda, but you can be sure, it's either N or S, and there are only
two choices. heheh
For quite a long time I knew there must be a Myatt connection to the Stephensons because they were
all around the same area--and mentioned twice in David's Will. So finally, through Alvin Utley, there you go,
Myatt! Infact, this family--go ahead,
check it out!!--maintained Stephenson connections in the naming of their children for a number of
generations, the name Charity in particular. One I particularly liked was David Jonathan.
I finally made a "Lane Diagram", gleaned mostly from a Thomas Lane page (THAT was a struggle), and
the final result was almost satisfying, but mostly just fascinating.
Quick and Dirty Lane Diagram
My current Flash is that Sarah Bradford Lane and Rebecca Lane McCullers were daughters of Joseph,
who was son of Joseph, Jr., who was son of Joseph, Sr., and their mother was Sarah Bradford Lane.
Then there is this, Joseph Jr. had a child named Sarah, but she was born before 1753--the two McCullers daughters in question
were born in 1797 and 1799 so...
more on this later. I once found a link to a website that went right to a list of all of Capt. Mathew McCullers' children
but it was a dead link...sighhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Sarah Lane, Sarah Bradford Lane, b. 1763, m. Mathew McCullers, had children Rebecca Lane McCullers and Sarah Bradford Lane McCullers
And not only that, Rebecca, as older and possibly sole surviving sister, would be THE name you would expect.

The following DOB is a PROBLEM!
Rebecca LANE was born on 3 Jun 1753 in , Wake Co., NC.
I of course wholeheartedly support her Existence--Stephen Stephenson married Rebecca Lane McCullers.
Incidentally, if you look at the census for Wake County in 1850 you'll see that on every page is the
name Stephen Stephenson, who gave each page his official enumeratorial blessing. The McCullers
name on the map is JJL McCullers--this is
Capt. Mathew McCullers' son's name, Joseph James Lane, surviving on this map in 1870 showing the
old Home Place.
(Do a Google on JJL McCullers and you
will find yourself in McCullers Cemetery on Donny Brook Rd.) Names remain in the same place for generations, that is, if you
are lucky. Luck is all over this map.
Here's some more luck:
McCullers Schoolhouse, not only
still standing but turned into a modern-day residence. This picture testifies to its antiquity.
Right above JJL McCullers and just below where Dutchman Creek
enters Swift Creek, are Stephensons--on the 1870 map as well as the 1878 map.
Infact, there is the name M Stephenson, which suits me, Mack Stephenson, just fine. hahahaha
But at this point it's uncertain what to make of M Stephenson.
Here is the 1878 Raleigh Map,
On the 1887 map the word STephenson is still in the right place (heheh), just below the confluence of Dutchman's Creek and
Swift Creek, and I suppose Pleasant Sqr. Church now deserves some looking into. The name Pleasants
is all over the Christopher Woodward
page and I've learned not to ignore the obvious. Speaking of which, there is another huge mystery right
there: Right below the prominent location Vineyard is the word Macedonia, with a Star drawn next to it.
What does the Star signify? My ggg Grandfather in Tennessee was called Malcus Adonia, and this is just
another one of those alliterative accidents, but the proximity of it was Glaring, to say the least.
Reminds me of that Star Trek episode. Know which one I'm talking abt?
What a Phenomenal Stroke of Luck!!
David willed some 200 acres on Terrible Creek, land purchased from
John Phillips, to his son David. In the 1790 and 1800 census, David and Solomon are noted as living near
Johnsons and Coats. Both these names are just below Terrible Creek, along with Utley, I might add.
I'm more than a bit puzzled by this, don't know quite what to make of it.
I have every certainty all these little mysteries will unlock themselves. One way or the other.
Here's a little confused Patch Work
from the beginnings ob my obsession, makes me smile seeing it now.
Alabama Cousin
I have also located
the actual tombstone of Tabitha Stephenson, who married William H. Pegram, and is buried across the street
from an historic grand old house, even comes with a story. They're having a little bit of trouble with
Tabitha's name over there, but hey!, I think Tabitha (there I go) herself was kinduv responsible.
Click on Photos, look for William H. Pegram.
I still want to be excited abt the Stephenson House, which was alluded to by my cousin descendant of
Brittian Stephenson--she being the fourth sibling line of David Stephenson using the
web to search for roots--but all I have now is a bigger mystery. Whaaaaaaa???????
But even if
if it is not the David Stephenson (son of Solomon Stevenson) House, it is *a* David Stephenson House, and the
land it's on is positively David Stephenson (son of Solomon Stevenson) land.. I guess my excitement could easily be
mistaken for insanity, but so it goes.
What you could say is that in many ways I wisht I'd never left Raleigh. But somebody had to do it.
And Isle of Wight County? Are you kidding me?
(Sarah's brother Joseph married Solomon's sister Elizabeth, incidentally.)
I've spent more than 40 years knowing David but not David's Mother's name. It's going to take awhile to
feel the same
abt The Ones Before. To love them the same way. It might seem strange?
It's like TV, man, I swear. One of those lost and then found things.
