Hobby Bed Room

Two bedrooms down, one to go. The process will be the same as the other two with lessons learned. Sadly I am starting this in 2021 while the COVID-19 pandemic is still going to material is expensive, or takes a long time to get, or both.

Before

(Jul. 2021)

I originally wanted to start doing this room right after finishing the Master Bed Room but COVID-19 had other plans. As before, new window, better insulation, new wiring, etc.

I guess the room was pink once

Demo

(Jul. 2019)

I removed the carpet. Then a great friend helped me remove all the rock wall (plaster on top of drywall). Then I removed the ceiling tiles and wall insulation. As in the danger room, the insulation in the walls was 2.5" rock wool from Pueblo, CO. I also learned that some of the subfloor had been replaced with OSB. Perhaps there was a waterbed incident?

and carpet. Found this under the subfloor.

Subfloor

(Sep. - . 2021)

The subfloor was a mix of 5/8" plywood and OSB. Clearly someone had done some repairs at one point. I assume the OSB was not original to the house. I replaced much of the various subfloors with new 23/32" Advantech OSB, glued with Loctite PL Pro adhesive and 2" self-tapping, flathead wood screws. I used 1/8" hardboard on top of the origianl plywood to raise the level to match the new OSB.

I installed 2x4 blocking with Simpson Strong-Tie brackets, two per block, anywhere there was an exposed endge to the subfloor.

The 2x6 floor joists were in pretty good shape. I needed to sand a little bit here and there to make things more level. Also, because of the way I cut the old subfloor, I had to sister some new 2x6 floor joists to provide support for replacement subfloor. Where possible I made sure the sisters spanned two subjoists for support and attached to existing joists with three 16d common nails every 16 inches and construction adhesive.

There is a serious crack in one of the subjoists under the NW corner of the room. Since there is a noticable uneveness to the floor in the living room next to the bedroom, I left the crack as is and will deal with it when I get to remodelling the living room. Because if I repair it now I may need to undo that repair in order to fix the uneveness in the living room.

Window

(Jan. 2022)

I purchased another 35in X 41in, dual-pane, high-altitude, casement window from Pella's Lifestyle series. This matches the one in the Master Bed Room.

It looked like it was going to rain before they finished the stucco on the outside so we rigged up a tarp to cover things.

Insulation

(Feb. 2022)

As before, cut furring strips and glued and scewed them to the studs to make 2x6 cavities on the exterior wall. Then I used 5.5in Rockwool Comfortbatt on the exterior wall and 3.5in Rockwool Safe-N-Sound on the interior walls as a sound barrier.

Drywall

(Feb. 2022)

Same as before. Used 5/8in drywall on the ceiling and 1/2in on the walls. I hired the same folks as last time. I was specific before they started that they leave a gap at the bottom for floor expansion. I think they are getting pretty good at texture as well.

paint

(Mar. 2022)

I have had a lot of bad luck with paint: peeling, flaking, rubbing off. I think I suck at painting. This time I used one coat of Zinsser 123 and two coats of uncolored white Sherwin Williams Duration. I thought this white was too cool in the Master, but it seems fine in the Hobby room.

Electrical

(Feb. 2022)

I used Wagos instead of wire nuts this time. They are much easier to use especially when you have to tie more than two wires together. I might use them again.

floor

(Mar. - Apr. 2022)

When I purchased flooring for the Master Bed Room, I purchased enough extra to do the Hobby Room as well. That way I don't have to find some new flooring that matches my 2-year-old flooring because floor manufactureres change styles every year.

The floor was pertty level but I did use some Masonite and cork as underlayment in some places to make it even more level.

Door

(Feb. 2022)

I used another solid-core, six-panel, pre-hung door. They are getting harder and harder to find. I also used Schlage door knobs just like I did in the other two rooms.

Finish

(Apr. 2022)

Used baseboards and like in the other rooms. This time I added trim around the closet and used luan (1/4in plywood) on the inside of the closet opening. I like it. It covers up the edge of the drywall and the 2x4 frame.
