Showing Source Details in Calibrator Selector

This page does not try to show the entire calibrator selector tool, nor does it try to show the full capabilities of the bullseye. The purpose of this page is to help discover how users want to reveal the details of the sources displayed in the bullseye. Below is one such way to display the details of a source. Hover your mouse pointer over one of the white circles and see the details appear. Below the bullseye are a series of questions to consider.

Questions to Consider

These questions pertain only to the display of the details of a source on the bullseye. How to move the center, zoom in and out, etc., will be covered elsewhere. Likewise, how to use color and size coding for the sources on the bullseye will also be covered in another document.

  1. The example above shows the details being activated when the mouse hovers over a source. Is this what we want, or should the mouse have to be clicked? If clicked, which button (L,R,Middle) and how many times (single, double)? (Keep in mind other things that clicking might be used for, such as selected a source, recentering the map, etc.)

  2. The example above shows the source information along side the bullseye. Is this what we want, or would a pop-up be better?

  3. Questions 3 & 4 assume the answer to question 2 is "Yes, along side is what we want."

  4. The above example shows the source details persisting until a new source is under the mouse pointer. An alternative is for the display to be wiped clean as soon as the mouse leaves a source (see second example at bottom of page). Should the display be wiped clean when the mouse pointer exits a source? (Keep in mind that if you answer "yes", we can't put the image links in that area, because you those links would be gone by the time you got your mouse over there.

  5. If you do want the source information to disappear, should that big gray box also disappear? If so, should it disappear automatically (as it does in the example at the bottom of the page), or by expressly pressing a hide/reveal control?
  6. Questions 5, 6, & 7 assume the answer to question 2 is "A pop-up would be better."

  7. Should the pop-up be like a tool-tip where it disappears when the mouse leaves the source, or should it be more like a window that must be explicitly closed?
  8. Questions 6 & 7 assume the answer to question 5 is "Not like a tool tip, more like a window."

  9. Should all other activities be blocked until the source detail window is closed?
  10. Question 7 assumes the answer to question 6 is "No, don't block; allow me to do other things."

  11. If the mouse enters another source, should the already-open source details window be updated with the current source, or should a new window be opened instead? (In other words, can only one source details window be open at a time, or is that number unlimited?)

  12. The examples on this page show only circles for sources -- no text. Another document shows an example where the source name appears on the bullseye display. Should names be a) never displayed, b) always displayed, or c) toggled on / off by some control?

  13. Regardless of where it is displayed, and how the display is triggered, what information about the source should be displayed?
