Amateur Radio

Like many other NRAO employees, I am an active amateur radio operator, holding the callsign N1IRZ. For more information on the ties between amateur radio and radio astronomy, check out my article on Ham Radio and the beginnings of radio astronomy.

On the HF bands, I prefer operating CW, and like the 30 and 17-meter bands. I enjoy operating QRP, both from my home QTH and when camping or on the road. I also enjoy Six Meters, the "Magic Band." I hold WAS and WAC awards, the WAC done with QRP. In addition to my Amateur Extra Class license, I also hold a First-Class Radiotelephone License with ship radar endorsement.

I am a member and past president of the Socorro Amateur Radio Association, a member of the Six Meter International Radio Klub (SMIRK), and of the American Radio Relay League.

I have written articles for QST, Radio Fun, The ARRL Letter, and the ARRL Web Extra, and am author of the book Morse Code: Breaking the Barrier, published by MFJ Enterprises, Inc. For more information on this book, please visit my other home page.
