Public Information Officer

National Radio Astronomy Observatory
Socorro, New Mexico

I am responsible for media relations, public education and community relations, and am based at the NRAO's Array Operations Center, located on the campus of New Mexico Tech in Socorro, New Mexico.

Media Relations

I serve as the point of contact for print and broadcast journalists seeking information about NRAO, its facilities, and the research done with those facilities. These duties include answering questions, arranging interviews, providing tours to accredited journalists and writing press releases and other informational documents. During meetings of the American Astronomical Society, I represent NRAO in the AAS Press Room.

Public Education

At NRAO-New Mexico, our public education program includes the VLA Visitor Center, lectures to school and educational groups by our staff members, support for the New Mexico Science Olympiad and local and regional science fairs. NRAO is a founding member of the Southwestern Consortium of Observatories for Public Education. We also are one of the sponsors of the Enchanted Skies Star Party, an annual event that brings amateur astronomers from across the nation to Socorro.

Community Relations

As one of Socorro County's largest employers and with the VLA a world-renowned tourist attraction, NRAO is an important part of our local community. NRAO employees participate in a number of community organizations and volunteer their services for local events. I am a past president of the Socorro County Chamber of Commerce.
