Helical Instabilities
Phil Hardee has long used linearized, time-dependent, fluid equations to study instabilities in jets
- Helical patterns common
- Most studies involve tightly wound helices as in M87
Long wavelength implies a cool (not relativistically hot) external medium
High pressure, high brightness region can swing wider than material
- Less beaming variation allows higher angle to line-of-sight
