Anna D. Kapinska
NRAO Associate Staff Scientist/Astronomy

Welcome to my personal webpage!

I am a Radio Astronomer and Astrophysicist and an Associate Staff Scientist at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory based in Socorro, NM (USA).

My research focuses on radio galaxies and how they affect their environments and the Universe as a whole, broadly speaking. I work on the evolution of radio galaxies understood as both the growth of their structures during their lifetimes and as a cosmological evolution of their population. I am interested in the physics of the relativistic jets, the environments of radio galaxies, and aspects of kinetic AGN feedback. In my methods I used to use semi-analytical methods, numerical simutaions (the good ol' Monte Carlo family), advanced statistics as well as vast observational data (the latter most typically in recent times). I am heavily involved in delivering many low frequency radio surveys (ASKAP, VLA, and previously also LOFAR, MWA, and RGZ). For more information on my research, science interests and and projects I lead or am involved in, follow links above to Research (TBA soon) and About Me.

I am also the current Lead of the NRAO Jansky Postdoctoral Fellowship Program and an NM-local coordinator of NRAO/GBO Summer Student program. I organise, or co-organise, many of the events listed below. If you are interested in any of those, or have questions, feel free to contact me directly (scroll to the bottom of this page for contact details). If you are interested in doing a student project with me, have a look at the projects I previously offered here.

NRAO Summer Students, Postdoctoral Fellows & other opportunities

NRAO has a rich program designed for both undergraduate and graduate students. For list of all available opportunities see the dedicated NRAO student website.

I am a Socorro-local coordinator of the summer studentships that run from June to August every year. To apply for a summer studentship at NRAO, please follow the link above to the general student opportunities. The application deadline is 1st Feb every year, and the application process usually opens in December.

I am also leading the NRAO Jansky Fellowship Program, targeting outstanding early career scientists, and future leaders. If you are finishing your PhD, or are within a few years of graduating, consider applying for the fellowship.

NRAO Educational Events

NRAO organises a variety of VLA/VLBA science support events to help the users achieving the best results with their data, and to teach both radio interferometry and the software for radio data processing. The events range from Community Days, to Data Reduction Workshops, to the original "Radio School": The NRAO Synthesis Imaging Workshop. List of current and past events can be accessed here.

20th Synthesis Imaging Summer School, 2024 (Socorro, NM)
19th Synthesis Imaging Summer School, 2023 (Charlottesville, VA)
18th Synthesis Imaging Workshop, 2022 (virtual)
17th Synthesis Imaging Workshop, 2020 (virtual)

New Mexico Symposium

Every year NRAO organises the Annual New Mexico Symposium and Jansky Lecture at NRAO DSOC, Socorro NM. The one-day long event brings astronomers, computer scientists and engineers from New Mexico and local states (Texas, Arizona) to showcase current astronomical research being done in the Southwest USA.

39th New Mexico Symposium (2023)
38th New Mexico Symposium (2022)
37th New Mexico Symposium (2021)
36th New Mexico Symposium (2020)
35th New Mexico Symposium (2019)
34th New Mexico Symposium (2018)
