X-Lines: 50 Status: RO Bill: I cannot think of any reason, aside from some legacy concerns, to have any Solaris workstations for EVLA software developers. This includes real-time programmers. Predictably, I cannot answer a question like "what platforms does the VxWorks development environment support?" without reading lots and lots of WindRiver information. Apparently such practical questions should be referred to your local WindRiver sales poo-bah. But I know, because there are shiny pictures, that the VxWorks environment primarily targets Windows. Likewise Java development tools. Most astro tools that we have available are indeed Solaris tools, but I understand that we will be supporting Linux as well -- note that the recent scientist workstations (those black boxes) have all been Linux. Not Solaris. I suggest that we standardize on Linux for development, or at most have dual-boot machines. (? VMWARE software ?) If we standardize on Linux, we could also standardize on office tools like http://www.openoffice.org but perhaps that's pushing it a bit at this time... But I don't see Solaris workstations as a reasonable software development environment. --bw -------------------------- Boyd Waters National Radio Astronomy Observatory http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/~bwaters bwaters@nrao.edu 505.835.7346
