Minutes from SSS Mtg 2007-Sep-25 Attendees: D.Harland, B.Hesman, G.v.Moorsel, J.Rochford, M.Rupen, L.Sjouwerman, B.Truitt, S.Witz [Text in square brackets were added by David when he was creating these minutes.] * David said that biggest goal for upcoming quarter will be model and rudimentary user interface for WIDAR prototype. * Stephan is working with John Benson on some issues related to the Archive Access Tool and the amount of memory it consumes. * Brian has investigated a few component libraries for making it easier to develop web apps. He is currently spending time with ICEfaces (www.icefaces.org). + Michael wondered if this is what OpenSky is using [it's not], and if SSS and OpenSky should be developing things in mutually compatible ways. He suggested he and Bryan discuss w/ Nicole. * Michael said there would be a WIDAR face-to-face meeting, here, in November. The rest of the meeting involved looking at JIRA issues that SSS has recently worked on, or which needed more input from astronomers. The SCT was viewed on screen; there were technical difficulties w/ the OPT. While discussing JIRA issues, the group came up with new ideas; these are presented after the list of issues, below. * EVL-151 & EVL-412: Names and abbrevs of ScanIntents - We discovered that the real issue is with scan MODES not intents. The reason for this is the limited screen real estate on the scan-summary line. The scan mode is listed on that line. + David will make a new JIRA issue for this. + Michael can close issue 151. + James should not do any more work on 412. + Michael can close issue 412, which was primarily for coming up with the abbreviations and displaying them. [Michael: perhaps you could move the bit about subscan intents into a new JIRA issue?] * EVL-231: Distinguishing action links from help links - Brian may close this issue. * EVL-306: Distance units for sources - Brian can restrict the list in the SCT to km, AU, pc, kpc, & Mpc then close this issue. * EVL-392: Display of unitialized dates - The use of "yyyy-mm-dd" display is fine, though the group wants consitent letter case (eg, not "yyyy-MM-dd"). - The group also asked how similar the date entry is to that of the Archive Access Tool. MJD entry and display was considered to be important. + [James: Create a new JIRA issue for making date entry/display similar to AAT. Keep this issue focused on uninit dates.] - The group also wanted unentered hours and minutes to automatically be treated as zeros. + [James: take care of this last item.] * EVL-398: Precision of source positions on summary screen - The requested dps are now shown on RA/Dec, but the group has some issues: 1. Rounding is only for summary page, not details page. 2. Rounding should affect only display, not the stored value. 3. Even on summary page, editing the value should force display of the full precision number. + [Note: I'd suggest still calling the toString method that takes a max dp and just using a large #, like 8. Reason: if you go with native precision, you'll see those x.y00000000001 and a.bcdef9999999 values.] * EVL-399: Change names of scan timing - Michael can close this issue. * EVL-400: Capitalize names of import/export formats in SCT - Group happy w/ capital "XML", "PST", etc. Maybe not as happy w/ "UNCOMPRESSED", "GZ", "ZIP". + [James: maybe go to all lower on the compression types?] * EVL-401: Change "View Current Results" to "View Results for *abc?" - James will work on known issues. - Group thought it might be nice to keep the "View Results for "*abc?" link displayed even after switching catalogs. - Group thought the input box, but not the "View..." link, should be blanked when user views whole catalog or group of catalog, as opposed to the search results. The box would be automatically repopulated when the user clicks on the "View..." link to revisit the search results. * EVL-407: Show scan loop in "bread crumb trail" - Showing just one loop in trail is fine, so long as loops are named in some outline-like way. * The dislike of the horizontal scroll bar inside of the sections of a detail page was expressed again. - David will add people to that issue's watch list. * We will demonstrate the use of an ephemeris table in the SCT next week. + [Brian: would you please try this feature and see if it works.] * The group noted that on the source summary page not all positions were editable. Brian noted that this was because those sources had positions that were not simple lat/lon pairs. If a source uses a polynomial or ephem table, eg, one must go to the details page to edit the position info. + The group would like to see some indicator on the summary page that would let users know why a particular source's position was not editable. - [Brian: please make a JIRA issue for this and add astronomers to watch list.] * Positions in galactic coords should not use HMS/DMS but just use degrees. + [David: make a JIRA issue for this. CelestialCoordinateSystem class should provide a "preferred units" method.] * We discussed the use for a time field in the SCT. Sources that use polynomials or ephemeris tables need a time in order to evaluate their current positions. Model supports this now and SCT is using the current time for position calculation. We decided not to address this now. * On the source summary page of the SCT we should display all sources in the same coordinate system. The user gets to choose the coordinate system. The group also wants to see some visual indicator showing that a particular source's position was originally entered in a system other than the one displayed currently. * Brian discussed drag & drop capabilities of ICEfaces and its possible use in a top level menu that could replace the cut/copy/paste bar. Michael thought d&d would be good for moving scans around in an SB. Group thought we should not spend time now developing new menu.
