Very Large Array tour on Monday 2 February 2004

Please consider touring the Very Large Array; a 27 radio antenna interferometer near Magdalena. Visiting the VLA from Santa Fe takes all day, as it is a 3 hour drive (one way)! The tour is at no extra charge. More information about all the details will be sent later by email only to persons who have signed up by Tuesday 20 January 2004 - when we know who is coming. Note that we leave on Monday morning from Santa Fe, so make sure you make your arrangements to be in Santa Fe on Sunday evening.

Tentative program:

• Depart from the Santa Fe Hilton at 9:00 am, with lunch on the way, and arrive at the VLA around noon.
• From late January to the beginning of February 2004 the VLA configuration is changed from CnB to C, one of the more impressive compact configurations.
  Depending on weather and work schedules, you might witness the move of an 82 feet, 230 ton antenna!
• Tour the site and operations in the antenna control building.
• Short stop at the recently modified visitor center.
• Visit to the antenna assembly building.
• Climb an antenna if possible (i.e., observing safety regulations)
• Probable visit to the ALMA test facility and three prototype submm wavelength antennas.
• Depart the VLA site just before sunset and arrive in Santa Fe in time for dinner.
