Local Information

Socorro is a friendly community of about 9000 people, located in the sunny Rio Grande valley 75 miles south of Albuquerque just off I-25. The main industries in Socorro are education and research, with the largest employers being New Mexico Tech and the NRAO. Socorro's population has one of the highest percentages of Ph.D.s per capita in the state of New Mexico. Socorro also has one of the highest percentages of fast food resteraunts per capita in the United States, but we're not convinced that this is related to the high fraction of Ph.D.s.

In mid-June the weather is typically warm and breezy with afternoon highs in the 90s (~30 C) and nighttime lows in the 60s (~14 C). Summer thunderstorms and strong winds can occur during this season. For more details about the weather in this region look at the Sevilleta wildlife refuge Meteorology/Climate Home Page.
