Lectures will be given by the NRAO staff, faculty from New Mexico Tech, Harvard, Univ. of Chicago, and Caltech, and by staff members of other radio observatories around the world. The range of subjects will be similar to past Summer Schools, and can be reviewed by consulting "Synthesis Imaging in Radio Astronomy", the published collection of lectures from the 3rd NRAO Synthesis Imaging Summer School (ASP Conference Series, Volume 6, 1989). The lectures will be given at a level appropriate for graduate students in astrophysics. There will be ample time for questions and discussion following each lecture. Copies of the lectures from the 1998 Summer School will be distributed to attendees in Socorro and collected together and published by the Astronomical Society of the Pacific following the school. All lectures will take place in room 101 at Workman Center on the New Mexico Tech campus. If you prefer to use a credit card but do not want to e-mail the credit card number and expiration date, then please send a separate FAX or paper mailing with those details. Please indicate how you will pay the registration fee on the response form attached to the end of this announcement. The registration fee covers: NRAO-provided transport (see TRANSPORTATION below), photocopies of each lecture, snacks during the morning and afternoon break on the lecture days, the school dinner on Friday June 19, and a sack lunch at the VLA on June 21. MEALS: Except as noted above, the registration fee does not cover the costs of meals. For breakfast, a complimentary continental breakfast is available at some motels, and numerous restaurants are located near the motels. During the lecture days, a cafeteria will be open on the New Mexico Tech campus within easy walking distance of where the lectures will be held. For dinner, several restaurants are within walking distance of the hotels. ACCOMMODATIONS: NRAO has rooms blocked at 3 motels (all located at the North end of California street in Socorro). Participants are responsible for contacting one of these hotels and making a reservation before June 1, 1998. Credit card information will be necessary to reserve the room. Participants from outside the USA may contact Terry Romero (tromero@nrao.edu) for assistance in making the reservation. Please mention that you are with the NRAO Synthesis Imaging School to get the guaranteed rate listed below. An NRAO representative will be at the airport on June 16 from 2:30 pm to 10:30 pm. Meet him near the information booth at the bottom of the main escalators on the baggage claim level. He will see that you get on a bus or van. If there are problems finding him, or if you are unexpectedly delayed, he will have a cell phone with the number [TBA]. COMMERCIAL SHUTTLE: If you cannot take advantage of the free NRAO shuttles provided above then it is possible, but expensive, to arrange for transportation through the "Socorro Taxi". The cost is approximately $46 one-way ($92 round-trip), and will be the responsibility of the traveler. This service is run by Jess Landers (jess@socorrotaxi.com or use the toll free number 1 800 991 4276). They require a credit-card reservation made well in advance of the desired time of travel. An Albuquerque based taxi, if you could talk them into it, would probably charge $100 for a one way trip to Socorro, so don't miss your NRAO bus! TRANSPORTATION Within Socorro: Buses will pick people up from the hotels each morning at 8:30am and take them to Workman 101 (lecture days), or to the AOC (demonstration day June 20), or to the VLA (tour day June 21). At the end of each day buses will travel from Workman 101 (lecture days) or the AOC (demonstration day) at 5:30 pm to return people to their motels. An exception to this will be on Friday, the night of the school dinner, when the buses will go from the Macey Center to the hotels at 9:00pm. CONTACT INFORMATION: If you have questions about the lecture program, or of a scientific nature, address them to Greg Taylor (gtaylor@nrao.edu) or Chris Carilli (ccarilli@nrao.edu). For assistance with registration or travel arrangements (especially for participants coming from outside the USA), please contact Terry Romero (tromero@nrao.edu).
