SDSS-III: the third phase of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

Kurt Anderson and Gretchen Van Doren (APO/NMSU)

The third phase of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey began in July 2008 and wil be completed in 2014. SDSS-III has four components: BOSS, which will determine the time evolution of the Hubble Constant H(z) since z=2.5; SEGUE-II, which will extend our earlier 3-dimensional mapping of the Milky Way to the outer disk; APOGEE which will similarly map the dust-obscured inner Milky Way via infrared spectroscopy; and MARVELS, a precision radial velocity survey of ~10,000 stars which is able to detect gas giant planets these systems.
