22nd Annual New Mexico Symposium

2006 October 6

Other Events of Interest

Several events of interest, not directly related to the New Mexico Symposium, will occur in the Socorro area on adjacent days. On this page, we have collected brief descriptions and sources for further information on these events.

NRAO LECTURE:   Dr. Mark Adams, Division Head of Education and Public Outreach at NRAO Headquarters, will give a public lecture titled "Looking into the Future of the VLA" on Thursday, October 5, at 19:00 in the room 212 of New Mexico Tech's Skeen Library. The event is part of this year's observance of "NRAO at 50".

The Library is a short walk from the AOC and Macey Center. Maps are available from the AOC receptionist.

VLA TOURS:   Guided public tours of NRAO's VLA instrument will be offered on Saturday, October 7, from 12:00 to 16:00. The VLA is currently being upgraded to the Expanded VLA, or EVLA, and some of the new equipment may be available for viewing. Further information is available about the tours.

The VLA is located about 50 miles west of Socorro on US 60, about a one-hour drive. Maps are available from the AOC receptionist.

The Socorro County Chamber of Commerce operates a van shuttle to the VLA from the Plaza in downtown Socorro. For reservations or further information call the Chamber at 505-835-0424.

TRINITY SITE:   Trinity Site at White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) will be open to the general public on Saturday, October 7, from 08:00 to 14:00. The first nuclear explosion in human history occurred at this site on July 16, 1945.

The site is about a one-hour drive from Socorro. Take Interstate 25 south to Exit 139 at San Antonio, then follow US 380 about 12 miles east, and turn right toward the WSMR Stallion gate about 5 miles south. A government-issued photo ID is required for entrance at that point. Further information is available on the WSMR website or by calling the Public Affairs Office at 505-678-1134/1700.

The Socorro County Chamber of Commerce also operates a van shuttle to Trinity Site from the Plaza in downtown Socorro. Details are available on the Chamber's website. For reservations or further information call the Chamber at 505-835-0424.

ALBUQUERQUE INTERNATIONAL BALLOON FIESTA:   This popular attraction begins a 10-day run at Balloon Fiesta Park in Albuquerque on the day of the New Mexico Symposium. The opening ceremony occurs on Saturday, October 7. Other events scheduled that day include the daily Dawn Patrol and the first of five Mass Ascensions that occur during the Fiesta.
