DSN design, by Scientific Atlanta, based on design for much simpler
existing stations
- PC / Unix workstation hardware, X windows interface
- Part of Deep Space Network complex; used existing facilities
- Large buarcracy limited design flexiblity
- High data rates required for operator interface
- Little testing built into design
- Unique null-tracking mode; but bad pointing
- Major revisions required due to problems found when tracking HALCA
- Full automation assumed from the start, no manual operation capability
- Failure of step in automatic procedure caused full system reset
- No astronomy capability, high system temp 200 K
- Isolated location, far from developers prevents easy problem diagnosis
