Kmail
Kmail is KDE's graphic mail client. In the past it had some problems, particularly IMAP support which I felt precluded
it's use here. The current version that comes with Redhat 7.2 is now functional, though there are some problems. Some of the
features of kmail include:
- IMAP support see Known Problems section
- Multiple folder support
- Selectable quoting for replies and forwards, simply highlight the text to quote
- Built in spell checker
- Inclusion of files
- Attachment of files
- Direct viewing of most attachments like Word docs, pdf, etc. by launching applicable viewer
- Built in filtering to remove junk mail
- Built in search function to search messages and folders
Known Problems
- Kmail gets a little slow on start-up if the inbox has more than 1000 messages in it.
- If you use NFS instead of IMAP for inbox access kmail will move /var/spool/mail/username messages to
/users/username/Mail/inbox as they come in.
- You have to click a folder and then the inbox to check new messages if you use IMAP for inbox access. The check new
mail function does not work.
- Transfering multiple messages at once from the inbox to a folder may cause kmail to crash if you use IMAP for inbox
access. If you see this behavior, you may be able to fix it.
- Create a tmp folder.
- Move all the messages from the offending folder to the new folder by dragging and dropping them. Selecting multiple
messages should work.
- Delete the original folder then recreate it.
- Drag the messages back.
This will create a new summary file which should fix the problem.
If you'd like to use kmail, I strongly encourage you to look at the
Kmail Configuration web page.
