NRAO/Socorro Colloquium Series
Optical Astromety in the Next Decade
When I started my career, the number of stars with astrometric
solutions for stellar parallax was just under 1e4. By the
likely end of my career, the number will be about 2e10. Clearly,
the paradigm for optical astrometry is changing. An overview
of the current situation and likely progress will be given, and
programs like PAN-Starrs, SkyMapper, and LSST will be discussed
from the point of view of an insider. The ESA Gaia space mission
cannot be ignored, and much of the future will be
dominated by the success and impact of that mission.
Prognostications based on reading this extremely clouded
crystal ball will be offered.
