Planetary Systems in the Stellar Graveyard

In my previous talk, "The Formation and Evolution of Planetary Systems," I discussed our current understanding of how planets and planetary systems form in conjunction with the formation of stars. I ended that discussion at the evolutionary stage where stable planetary systems have evolved to resemble (at least roughly) the Solar System. However, stars and their planetary systems are not static, and will continue to evolve until at some stage the nuclear fuel in their parent stars will be exhausted. What happens then? I will present some of the latest insight into this question based in part on new observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope.
