A THOUSAND YEARS OF ASTRONOMY IN THE SOUTHWEST

Astronomy is nothing new in the southwest. A thousand years ago a great pre-Columbian culture flourished in the semi-arid region of the San Juan Basin, in what is now New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Arizona Strategies leading to their successful ascendency included knowledge of the skies, some of which these master builders embedded in great architectural wonders. The study of archaeoastronomy attempts to decipher the sites where ancient astronomers made observations of the heavens and develop an understanding of what these traditions can teach us today.
