The impact of computing to synthesis imaging

This talk consists of two parts. The first part is a historical review of how we got to the current situation in which it is mandatory to use large amounts of digital computing to make radio images of the objects we want to study. The second part is a discussion of data reduction philosophy from a highly abstract viewpoint, and presentation of the scaling laws that indicate that we are likely to remain in this situation for the foreseeable future.
