The Planet-Metallicity Correlation

I will give an update on late-breaking news regarding extrasolar planets, including a new detection of the two lowest mass planets. However, the main focus of my talk will be a presentation of new results from a spectrsocopic analysis of more than 1100 stars on the Keck, Lick and AAT planet search surveys. This analysis quantifies the correlation between stellar metallicity and the occurrence rate of gas giant planets and helps to distinguish whether high stellar metallicity is an initial condition, inherited from the molecular birth cloud, or a pollution phenomenon from late stage accretion of gas-depleted material.
