I will discuss some of the major science drivers for the optical and near-IR interferometer to be sited at the Magdalena Ridge Observatory, and will give an overview of how the design of the interferometer aims to meet these science goals. The talk will include some of the lessons learned from the COAST interferometer in Cambridge.
