Recent Results from the
Caltech Submillimeter Observatory

The CSO is now fully equipped with continuum and line detectors for the frequency range 200 - 900 GHz, as permitted by the atmospheric windows. Line surveys are nearing completion for this entire range. The new bolometer camera, SHARC, which operates at 450 and 350 um, has been used for initial searches for dusty objects at z=2-5, which would represent a population of primeval galaxy candidates. Also observations of submillimeter absorption lines due to quasar lensing galaxies have been made, together with some observations of emission lines from distant objects. Many interstellar medium studies have been carried out, including spatial and velocity structure measurements, which are convincingly interpreted as evidence for turbulence.
